Local Authorities across England & Wales are being encouraged to promote the Registered Competent Person Electrical (RCPE) website as part of a campaign to improve electrical safety around the home.
The move is part of a drive by Local Authorities Building Control (LABC) to help homeowners understand their responsibilities surrounding electrics in the home.
Paul Everall, Chief Executive of LABC commented: “Many homeowners are still unaware of the requirements of Part P of the building regulations – which specifically relates to electrical work.
“Under Part P certain electrical work carried out in the home requires notifying to the local building control department. This can either be done directly, which incurs a cost, or by an electrical contractor registered with a Government approved certification scheme who can self-certify the work and notify building control on behalf of the householder.
“The Registered Competent Person Electrical website lists all Part P registered firms across England and Wales and makes it easy to search for a local contractor. In addition to this it contains a host of useful information and resources about electrical work.
“Many local authorities’ websites already contain a link to the RCPE site and we will be encouraging more to do so.”
More than 42,000 businesses are now listed on the Registered Competent Person Electrical website.
Since its launch in June 2014 the site has attracted more than 370,000 visitors, with on average, more than 7,500 searches for local electricians carried out each month.
Emma Clancy, CEO of Certsure, which operates the NICEIC and ELECSA brands, added: “The RCPE website is a fantastic resource for anyone considering having electrical work carried out in their home.
“We are delighted that more and more councils will be sharing a link to the site as it will help promote the important message about using a registered contractor.”
NAPIT Group Chief Executive Michael Andrews commented: “The fact that LABC are promoting the use of Registered Competent Person Electrical website is a welcome step towards providing as many consumers as possible with peace of mind by allowing them to locate electricians who are competent and have their work regularly assessed within their local area.
“We hope that going forward every local authority will have a link to RCPE on their website.”
